How Would a UFC Fighter Fare on the Street?
Michael Pace

UFC Fighters on the Street The "Ultimate Fighting Championships" dubbed the UFC by many became the "talk of the town" in many martial arts circles. It opened up a whole new thinking in terms of what was really effective in real combat. Promoted heavily by the Gracie family (of Gracie Ju Jitsu), these so called 'no holds barred events' touted the idea that 90% of all fights (or self defense altercations) went to the ground. While the facts, which have been compiled by some, since then have proven otherwise, the concept is still being heavily sold even to this day. So, how would a UFC fighter fare on the street? The UFC fighters are super athletes. They are excellent mixed style fighters that would be pretty awesome on the street. But, you must remember that even "no holds barred" tournaments such as the UFC still have rules. Lots of them. They just don't advertise the rules. It's still a sport. On the street a number of different elements come into play. One is the adrenal rush. Athletes accustomed to ring fighting are in their element. A street attack is really not in most people's element. That's unless of course, you are a street thug who gets in fights on regular basis. Even there, some adrenal rush will occur. The effects of adrenaline are severe. They limit our cognitive thinking, hand eye and fine motor skills. The other element is that there are no rules on the street. You don't wear steel cups on the street. Eye gauging, throat attacks, ear claps, groin ripping are all "legal" on the street. Can a good striker stop a UFC competitor on the street? Probably not, for a number of reasons. But what are the chances of coming accross a professional athlete, trained in mixed martial arts on the street? It would be better to prepare for the most common type of attacks and attackers, wouldn't you agree?
