Defending Against a Cross Wrist Grab

How to Defend Against a Cross Wrist Grab

  1. A cross wrist grab is when someone grabs your left wrist with their left hand (or vise versa). The difference here is you cannot pull straight back to work against the thumb opening like we did with the same side wrist release.

      
  2. After making a fist to prevent your attacker from grabbing your fingers and bending back with their other hand, you will make a small circle to the outside, bringing your fist over the top of their hand.


      
  3. In one motion you will continue your movement so that you pull your wrist (left in this case) back to your right shoulder as you step all the way back with your opposite foot (right in the illustration).

      
  4. By executing the technique in this manner, you will be working against the thumb (weakest part of his grip). Make sure you maintain eye contact as you step back. The wrist should be snapped back quickly and firmly to the opposite shoulder.
